Young carers are children and young people aged up to 18 who look after a family member in the home. This could be a parent, brother, sister or grandparent with an illness, disability, mental health problem or problems with alcohol/drugs.

What support is available for young carers in York?

York Carers Centre support lots of young carers in York.

LAFFS (laughs, advice, fun, friendship and support group) is a youth club which is just for young carers. At LAFFS, young carers can play games, make things, sit around, have fun and take some time out from their caring responsibility.

York Carers Centre also have trips and events for young carers. They're usually in the holidays but can be on evenings and weekends. The events are a chance for young carers to have a break from their caring role and to meet other young carers.

1:1 support is also available from York Carers Centre and this is to support young carers who are having a particularly difficult time. It's a chance for young carers to talk through any problems and find ways to make things better.

If you register with York Carers Centre as a young carer, you will get a carers' discount card. If you care for someone who is over 18, you will also be able to get a Carers Emergency Card.
