The Friends of York Hospitals help and support local hospital patients. Our Hospital Volunteers provide a variety of services and support through volunteering in a regular weekly (or sometimes fortnightly) time slot of between 2 and 3 hours. The Friends also fundraise to pay for additional medical equipment and services to make patients’ hospital stay or visit more comfortable.

We are mainly based at York Hospital, although we also have volunteers at 2 small elderly rehabilitation hospitals in The Groves and Dringhouses.

Our largest group of volunteers provides refreshments and supportive conversation to patients recovering from operations and surgical procedures. We also run a newspaper delivery service, operate a mobile library trolley service, and work on the front desk guiding patients and visitors around the hospital. Additional volunteer teams help stroke patients recover their communication skills, provide arts and crafts activities in children’s outpatients, and lead a weekly singalong session on a ward for patients with mental health issues.

Being a Hospital Volunteer is a sociable and satisfying thing to do which involves a regular but relatively small time commitment. It is an opportunity to give something back, to feel valued and part of the local community. While not involved in clinical decisions and practice, hospital volunteering offers an opportunity to work alongside NHS staff, build working relationships with patients and get to know a hospital from the inside.

We ask for a commitment of at least 6 months although there is some flexibility over this, eg we recognise that you may need to have time away because of holidays, exams, school/ college trips, family or illness and just ask you to let us know when this happens. The times when hospital volunteers are most needed are mornings and the late afternoon/ early evening period. Opportunities to volunteer earlier in the afternoon do exist but are fewer in number. Please note that there is a lower age limit of 16 for volunteering within the NHS.

For more information, and a downloadable application form, see the Friends of York Hospitals website in particular the Volunteers page, or contact us direct.
