The Parent Mentoring Service aims to support families in York who have a disabled child/young person or child/young person with additional needs. Volunteer mentors are recruited, trained and supervised and will support families to:
•Improve parenting skills and knowledge,
•Improve family access to support services,
•Improve the parents ability to cope,
•Improve children’s attendance at school and enthusiasm for learning,
•Support the family to understand their child’s disability or additional needs.
Volunteer mentors will meet with parents either in the home or in a community setting weekly. They will be matched with families for 6 months and will work to achieve parent-led goals.
