Raising the Participation Age: Learning is Changing

Did you know – As of September 2013 all young people are now required to stay in learning until the end of Year 12.

In the coming years new jobs will demand higher skills and better qualifications. Raising the Participation Age (RPA) is about ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to gain qualifications and skills to help them to progress to higher education, work and successful adult life.

Why are things changing?

Most young people already participate in education and training beyond the age of 16. Evidence shows that young people who continue in education or training between the ages of 16–18, are more likely to find employment, earn more and have a better quality of life.

Where can I get more information?

Schools are responsible for ensuring all young people in Year 9–11 have access to independent careers guidance. In addition, support is available to young people who are aged 16 to 19, and who are not currently in Education, Employment or Training, from the Young People's Drop In Service at 30 Clarence Street. There's more information on the Department for Education website.
