The Personalised Learning and Work Programme combines three main elements:

  • Education and training with the opportunity to gain further qualifications and employability skills
  • Work experience and voluntary opportunities in an area suited to your interests. You will have a sustained period of time in a placement with one or more organisations to help build a track record of experience for your CV as well as strengthen employability skills
  • Leisure activities with the opportunity to meet and socialise with other students.

It is an individual person-centred programme based upon input from the student, parents/carers and support professionals. Students could progress on to further learning, volunteering, supported employment or a range of local activities in York. This type of programme may be considered for learners whose needs cannot currently be met by existing programmes offered by:

  • York sixth form colleges
  • Independent training providers
  • York College or Askham Bryan College

and whose level of need mean that they would reasonably be considering an out-of- area Independent Specialist College placement to continue their learning.

The PLWP programme provides an exciting alternative which places the focus on work experience in York accompanied by a bespoke package of learning which prepares the learner for real employment (or volunteering) and independent living, building towards living a full adult life in York.

See the Life, Learning and Work booklet for examples of personalised learning and work programmes.
