Reward and recognition

Children and young people provide valuable contributions to services, local authorities and participation groups, and their involvement should be rewarded and/or recognised in some way. It is very important that children and young people know that their effort and participation is acknowledged, respected and valued.

This document provides guidance on different methods of reward and recognition, and the types of participation which should be rewarded. This document has been created using guidance from national organisations, and using feedback from local authorities, parents/carers and young people.

There are three Rs which are important to understand: reward, recognition and reimbursement.

  • Reward - Something tangible that is of value to a young person.
  • Recognition - Positive acknowledgement of the participation of children and young people.
  • Reimbursement - Compensating for an expense incurred through participation.
