FIS community champions

Please note, we are currently looking at revising the community champion project so are not currently recruiting.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join York’s award winning Family Information Service (FIS). The aim of York FIS is to provide free, impartial and good quality information, advice and guidance to mums, dads and carers.

  • Job role: parent champion (volunteer)
  • Location: York
  • Hours:  5-10 hrs per week to fit around existing commitments

This is a flexible role and would suit someone who could fit this around their existing arrangements. An enhanced CRB check is compulsory and will be undertaken before you start.

What is the role?

As an FIS community champion you will play a key role in engaging and supporting families. You will talk to mums, dads or carers about childcare, family activities, parent involvement and more. The aim is to support families to make informed choices about childcare and services they may access.

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for volunteers who:

  • Feel confident approaching and speaking with others and can get alongside people and understand their world.
  • Understands the difficulties parents face in using childcare or family activities and the reasons for this.
  • Knows potential users of childcare or family activities as well as areas where they may be actively engaged/have good links with parents and other groups in their local community.
  • Has had a positive experience of using formal childcare or family activities.
  • Can record information accurately so the project can be monitored and evaluated.

We need committed champions who will talk to parents and carers, make suggestions on the different childcare and family services they could use and where appropriate referring parents to the Family Information Service for more expert advice.

What support is available?

  • Full training and support will be provided, including a comprehensive induction programme and access to training and development. Qualifications gained may help you with future career developments.
  • Expenses will be reimbursed.

How to apply

You can apply using our online form. There's no set closing date for expressing an interest.
